Two days International Conference entitled “Dynamic Strategies in Plant Sciences for Crop Sustainability and Food Security” has been organized on May 26-27, 2021 (virtually on Zoom) by Department of Botany, Government College Women University Faisalabad, Pakistan. The aim of the conference is to provide an International Honorable Forum for the academicians, researchers, managers, industrial participants and students to share their research findings with global experts. The session formally started with recitation of Holy Quran and Naat-e-Rasool-e-Maqbool (PBUH). The conference commenced with the welcome address of Dr. Abida Kausar, Conference Chief Organizer / Incharge, Department Botany, GCWUF. She also gave an overview of the objective of the conference, introduction and achievements of the department. She highly acknowledged the support of Worthy Vice Chancellor in organizing this event. Dr. Zill-i-Huma Nazli, Registrar and Director Advanced Studies, GCWUF (Patron of the event) appreciated the efforts of Incharge, Department of Botany and the organizing team. She started her talk with the statement “Plants are Life” and admired the department on selecting such an important topic for the conference. In the inaugural session, distinguished national and international speakers and guests, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ruhi Mermut, Prof. Dr. Munazza Gull, Dr. Odile Berge and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ashraf appreciated the organizing team for arranging such a nice conference and put forward their thanks for providing a platform to share new ideas, research and methods adopted in agriculture and plant sciences. They hoped for more such events in future and maximum participation from various sectors. Worthy Guest of Honor, Prof. Dr. Anwar-ul-Hassan Gilani Vice Chancellor, University of Haripur KPK, joined the inaugural session and appreciated the dynamic leadership of Professor Dr. Robina Farooq, Vice Chancellor, GCWUF in uplifting and managing the university with such grace, he also admired the whole Botany Department for organizing this gracious event with many national and international speakers. He highlighted the problem of food security as global challenge, by stating that in 2030 a huge gap is expected between food demand and supply. There is inequality in food distribution which is the major cause of various diseases like stunting growth is the result of food shortage, similarly cardiovascular diseases are caused by excessive food consumption. He added that sustainability relies on economy, management and production. He emphasized that “Help our farmers in growing food with more commercial value” and ended the talk by wishing a great success for the event. Professor Dr. Robina Farooq, Vice Chancellor, GCWUF (Patron In-Chief of the event) joined the conference and in her address, she welcomed all the national and international speakers and participants. She started her talk with the words that we are facing many agricultural challenges in current times and one of them is how to feed 9 billion people by the end of 2050. She also added that better practices come with a cost like loss of biodiversity, reduce porosity of soil (creating water shed), enormous weed growth due to fertilizer application, application of herbicides containing chelators reduces the soil fertility. She suggested that there is dire need of some natural systems by which we can protect our environment by cleaning our natural resources like air, water and soil as well as by take care of wildlife. At the end she commended the efforts of Botany Department on organizing an international level event which was the need of the time. The first plenary lecture was delivered by Dr. Zabta Khan Shinwari, Professor Emeritus, Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan on “Ethics: Ensuring Food Security in the era of Climate Change”. The second plenary lecture was delivered Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ruhi Mermut, University of Saskatchewan Dept. Soil Science, Saskatoon, Canada, Harran University, Şanlıurfa, Faculty of Agriculture, Dept. Soil Science, 63200 Turkey on “Soils, the Media for Sustaining Life on our Planet” TECHNICAL SESSION-I: “Plant Physiology and Seed Science Technology” Dr. Irfana Lalarukh, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany GCWUF introduced chair and co-chair of the first session of the day. The session was chaired by Dr. Muhammad Yasin Ashraf, Professor, Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB), The University of Lahore, Pakistan and co-chaired by Dr. Muhammad Shahbaz, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan. The session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Abdul Wahid, Department of Botany, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan, and co-chaired by Dr. Muhammad Arfan, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan. The First Key Note lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Stephen C. Fry from The Edinburgh Cell Wall Group, Institute of Molecular Plant Sciences, The University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom, on “Detecting plant cell-wall reactions in vivo: fruit softening as an example”. Prof. Dr. Peter Kettlewell, from Drought Mitigation Group Co-Ordinator. Agriculture and Environment Department.
